Frequently Asked Questions

Don't Waste Sanitizer
BTF Iodophor requires surfaces to be wet for 2 minutes to be effective. You do not need to immerse or soak your equipment, just insure the entire surface is wet for 2 minutes by using a spray or swirl method.

Importance of Measuring Correctly
Ever use the saying “too much of a good thing”? BTF Iodophor is effective at 1 teaspoon to 1 1/2 gallons of water. This ratio is based on rigorous testing to confirm effectiveness and has been approved by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Using more sanitizer than recommended can do more harm than good. Powder products, like Craft Meister brewery wash, should easily dissolve and go into solution, if it doesn’t you have used too much.

You cannot sanitize dirt!
Cleaning and sanitizing are not the same, they are 2 separate steps. Sanitizing without cleaning will still leave you with dirty equipment that can harm your brew. Carefully cleaning your equipment first, removes residues and give no chance for microorganisms to hide. Now your sanitizer will do its job properly.

To rinse or not to rinse, that is the question
BTF Iodophor is a no-rinse sanitizer. Rinsing after sanitizing can actually do more harm by reintroducing microorganisms to your equipment. The taste of your beer or wine will not be affected by BTF Iodophor when used as directed. Not all sanitizers are no-rinse. Always follow the manufacturer's directions for sanitizing food contact surfaces.

What needs to be sanitized?
Anything that comes in contact with the wort and fermented beer after the boil, including your hands. The heat from the boil will take care of any microorganisms that come in contact with the wort during that time.

What is the shelf life for BTF Iodophor? How long is it effective once it is mixed?
The BTF Iodophor concentrate has a minimum shelf life of 2 years (most will last much longer). To prolong its life, store in a cool, dark place and keep from freezing. It is best to mix BTF Iodophor with cold water just before you need it because heat and sunlight will degrade it quickly. But as long as the brownish/yellow color remains, your Iodophor solution should be useable (usually about 24 hours). Keep Iodophor Test Strips handy to confirm the effectiveness.

Do bottles need to be filled immediately after sanitizing?
Bottles can be filled right away or, if stored properly, you can wait a few hours to a few days. Keep airborne contaminants from getting inside the bottles by covering or inverting them.

Basic Cleaning and Sanitizing Tips
Avoid using scrubbing pads or other abrasives to clean plastic. Small scratches left behind are difficult to clean and sanitize. Use scent-free cleaners and sanitizers.
